Preparation of the Hydrogen Economy - Using the Existing Natural Gas Grid as a Catalyst
In the project Naturalhy, the option of having a maximum hydrogen concentration of 50 Vol.-% in existing natural gas grids is being investigated. The project is co-financed by the European Commission through the Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006) for research, technological development and demonstration (RTD). The following balance points are in the focus of the team consisting of 39 European partners:
- Life Cycle Analysis consideration regarding the effect of CO2 emission reductions of various hydrogen production and transport scenarios
- Pipeline safety and its dependence on hydrogen concentration
- Material reliability of existing pipelines and installations
- Pipeline Integrity
- Integrity of transport pipelines
- Opportunities of burning natural gas/hydrogen mixtures in existing end devices and options for the separation of hydrogen by membrane technologies
- Compilation of a software application for the evaluation of the suitability of different pipes and grid components for hydrogen transport
